In 2006 NERC created the 'sportsman' 30-pound weight class that limited weapons in order to reduce damage and inspire creativity in combat robot design.

All robots in this class must have an active weapon, but spinners are severely restricted. Wedges of any form are forbidden. Section 2.2 of the Robot Fighting League Rule Set covers specific weapon restrictions, but the final decision on acceptance in the class is largely up to the event organizer.
