The wedge is a category of combat robot design.

The archetypal wedge design features a ramp with a very low leading edge propelled by a high-powered drive with heavy armor. The main strategy is to outlast enemies and disrupt their attacks. Due to the relatively low difficulty of building an armored drivetrain, this is perhaps the most common combat robot design.

Perception

Both beginners and experienced builders in robot combat build robots without an active weapon, but there is pressure on builders to produce weaponed bots because some people believe they are more exciting to watch and better for the sport at large. There are groups of builders in the community whose attitudes are discernably anti-wedge.

On the other hand, wedges can be efficient and durable machines and they do win a lot of matches. See: Winning percentage by weapon type.

History

The first effective wedge design was Greg Munson's 'La Machine' which dominated the 1995 Robot Wars event. It won the middleweight championship, the middleweight rumble, and the heavyweight rumble.
