Servo

From Combat Robot

Jump to: navigation, search

An R/C servo combines an electric motor, an ESC, a feedback potentiometer, and a multi-stage gear reduction train into a compact package. The intended purose of the servo is to respond to a signal from the R/C receiver and provide position proportional motion in response to equivalent motion at the transmitter input.

Servos may be modified to provide continuous rotation proportional speed output for use as small, inexpensive drive systems for robots. Well illustrated instructions for such modifications may be found at Kronos Robotics.

Modified servos were once popular drive systems for antweight robots, but the availability of small ESCs and more powerful drive options has nearly eliminated servo drives from combat robotics.
