Lexan
From Combat Robot
Lexan is the trade name for a clear polycarbonate resin thermoplastic manufactured by GE Plastics. Polycarbonate is exceptionally tough and absorbs enormous impacts without breaking.
Lexan is not the same thing as Plexiglas(R) or Lucite. It is the most commonly recognized name for the generic classification of polycarbonate.
The clear walls of a typical robot combat arena are usually made of Lexan.
Other polycarbonate brands are Makrolon, Calibre and Novarex.
Advantages
Lexan does not block radio signals as metal or carbon fiber armor do. A polycarbonate armored robot will generally not require an external radio antenna. Lexan is particularly popular as top cover robot armor for this reason.
Lexan is also easy to cut, drill, and machine. It can also be solvent bonded to other Lexan panels to form very tough structures that do not require mechanical fasteners.
