Horsepower is a non-metric unit of measurement for power. In scientific discourse the term "horsepower" is rarely used because of the various definitions and the existence of a standard unit for power, the watt. However, the idea of horsepower persists as a legacy term in many languages, particularly in the automotive industry for listing the maximum rate of power application of internal-combustion engines.
