Backlash in machining refers to the short distance that leadscrews can turn before they engage movement of the X, Y, or Z axes in an opposite direction. In complicated parts, these differences can add up to dimensional errors in a finished part. A common way to mitigate this problem is to use a DRO system on a mill, ensuring that the distance moved is accurate.
