Angular velocity

Angular velocity is, essentially, rotational speed measured by the angle traveled. 400RPM is an angular velocity. 5MPH, on the other hand, is linear velocity.

Angular velocity comes into play very often in combat robotics, because we use rotational electric motors to do almost everything.

Here's a very typical example: I have a gearmotor that I'm going to use for my drivetrain. It turns at 500RPM, and my wheels are going to be 2" in diameter. To calculate the distance traveled, I first find the circumference of the wheel, using Circumference=πd, with d being the diamater of the wheel. The distance around the wheel is ~6.28", so the distance traveled is 3140" per minute(6.28*500), or ~4.36FPS([3140/12]/60).
